1..8.5.15 Why a Countdown Theme?
I was thinking about the best overarching theme for a leadership blog from an astronaut commander.
Sure, I’ve been to space three times, commanded a complex and highly successful Space Shuttle science research mission, and exercised leadership in many real-world positions as an Air Force Colonel and astronaut commander.
In recent years, I’ve spoken to hundreds of thousands of people in thousands of presentations on every continent except Antarctica, written the first book ever from an astronaut to bring out the leadership lessons applicable here on Earth from command in space, and consulted with business leaders from many great companies.
But still, now it’s time for a first-ever purpose-powered leadership blog entry. Where the heck to start?
I kept coming back to thoughts of sitting on my back on Pad 39B at Kennedy Space Center in Columbia or Atlantis for each of my three missions, waiting to go in eager anticipation. That experience is at the same time nerve-wracking and thrilling as you can’t wait to get started on the adventure of a lifetime.
But of more relevance to the topic of leadership, a space mission is more than an adventure, but a venture just like any business or team venture. A countdown implies intense and purposeful preparation to produce a successful outcome of that venture.
No question – the common thread for all my leadership blog posts will be COUNTDOWN, because it encapsulates all the myriad of preparatory actions and checks necessary for success and also provides a concise framework to concisely present key points for each blog entry.
Various definitions of a countdown highlight not just the fact that it consists of the final moments before a launch or significant event, but also encompasses all the checks, preparations, processes, increased activity, recognition of a deadline, and step-by-step actions taken to kick off that event on a success-oriented flight path.
My view of what this astronaut commander can offer you in terms of leadership with every blog entry, regardless of specific topic, is a methodical countdown of 3 or 4 key principles or concepts, fleshed out with real-word stories, focused on gaining new insights on the exercise of leadership.
So, to summarize Astronaut Commander blog mission number one, consider the value of a countdown approach to bolstering your leadership because it is:
- Methodical and step-by-step and
- Comprises checks and preparations to
- Increase the right kind of activity and intensity leading to success in bolstering your ability to influence others for mission accomplishment.
I can’t wait to get off the pad and present my take on real-world, operational, get-the-job-done leadership to you through this blog!
